Yesterday Shana and I got to ride the Shinkansen which is the very fast bullet train that runs around Japan. Train rides in and of themselves are pretty boring. You just sort of sit there and read or whatever. However I did see some funny, interesting and cool things from the train as we zoomed out of Tokyo and north to Shin Shirakawa.
Driving Ranges: The golf driving ranges in Tokyo are like 5 to 6 stories tall and completely surrounded by the netting that you find at driving ranges that are next to the freeway. They also had targets painted on the netting which I thought was pretty cool. I am curious to see if they have to harness you in if you are using the 5th floor range since there can’t be any sort of protective gate.
CoCo’s: I saw a CoCo’s diner in a Tokyo suburb. That is all.
A Giant Statue of a Man Playing a Grand Piano on a Roof: That is all.
Outdoor Stairwells: This was also something I just noticed about Japans apartment buildings. All the stairwells are exposed to the elements. I am sure there is good reason for this but its very odd to see.
Stop Chimes on the Shinkansen: At every stop we were greeted by a really elaborate chime system that sounded like late 18th century harpsichord or piano forte. Go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX8Og4ilc8M to listen. It sort of sounded like a stage entrance to She Stoops to Conquer.
Saitama Super Arena: Home of many K-1 kickboxing matches, Pride Fighting and I think even the UFC has used Saitama. Its pretty cool looking even at 200 mph.
A sign for a company called, “Moon Bat” : That is all.
